Things to see and do in Brisbane

In Brisbane, you’ll find no shortage of attractions and activities to take part in, especially if you’re staying in the CBD for a few days. Our guide below is perfect for cruises from Brisbane and we've ensured everything is close by the CBD. Whether you’re wanting to jump from to bank to bank, visit the iconic Queensland Museum and Science centre or take a ride on the Wheel of Brisbane, we have plenty of information for you below. Take a look!

Fashion and Shopping

For those of us who love to shop, you’ll feel right at home in Brisbane. All of the CBD’s main shopping outlets including Myer and David Jones are right in the heart of the city. Head down to Queen Street and you’ll find yourself surrounded by more shopping opportunities you can imagine.

Some of the best places to shop in Brisbane are in the outdoor malls, which is fantastic if you’re in the city to soak up the amazing weather. Focus on pacing up and down Queen Street Mall and Albert Street and you’ll have access the best shopping Brisbane City has to offer.

Food and Dining

One of the best parts of Brisbane is the city’s breakfast food culture. Wake up early and head on down to Charlotte and Elizabeth Streets, near the Queen Street Mall, and you’ll find restaurant-lined streets everywhere you look. As for dinner, some of the best restaurants include Jamie’s Italian Kitchen along with Mr Edwards Ale House in the city’s North East.

For an experience unique to Brisbane though, you’ll need to cross the river from the CBD to South Bank. Either walk or take the ferry to South Bank Terminal 2 or 3 and wander down to Streets Beach. The manmade and waterfront precinct is like nothing else in Australia and you’ll find two 500 metre long restaurant strips on Little Stanley Street.

Family Attractions and Activities

Where Brisbane really shines is in the attractions department. If you’re visiting the city with your family before your cruise, you’re going to find so many awesome casual and high adrenaline activities to take part in. Start off with the awesome 60m high Wheel of Brisbane on South Bank, and from there wander back through the lagoon and manmade beach or even go for a dip if it’s a bit too warm.

Staying on South Bank, you’ll find the Gallery and Queensland Museum and Science Centre which is home to dinosaur bones, biome-specific animals and a whole lot more. Heading back into the city now, head off to the Botanic Gardens for a stroll. If you work your way North to South you can exit on the footbridge over the Brisbane River to the maritime museum.

Sports Attractions

If you’re lucky enough to be stopped over in Brisbane City during football season, you’ll be able to head over to Suncorp Stadium and buy a ticket to watch the latest footy games. The stadium is only a few minutes by bus and taxi from the city.

For adventurers and lovers of the outdoors, book a ride on the mini Segways with X-Wing’s. You and the family can power around South Bank and take in as much of the city as possible with little effort. Consider Riverlife Adventures too, as you’ll be able to spend a few hours kayaking down the river taking in the view from the water.

Architecture

Most travellers don’t know Brisbane’s city skyline has almost doubled in size since 2010 and that has meant a modern architecture and design boom! Some of the country’s tallest buildings stand in Brisbane’s city right beside some of the oldest.

We suggest beginning your architecture tour of Brisbane at the Aurora Tower and working your way through the city until you reach the North Bank. Take one of the footbridges to South Bank and continue through the museum precincts until you find the Exhibition Centre.

Conclusion

Now that you’ve got an outline of what to do before your cruise from Brisbane, you’ll have plenty of ideas to help you take in as much of the river city as possible. Always keep in mind the city's public transport is the world's best, so if you get stuck, just jump on a bus or ferry.
