Cruise Guide to Auckland, New Zealand

The home of endless natural beauty, and a key filming location for the huge blockbuster series the Lord of the Rings, New Zealand has it all. One of its most notable cities, Auckland, is known as “the city of sails’ as it is located on a peninsula between two harbors. With the most boats per capita than anywhere else in the world, Auckland is a city for people who love everything nautical-related and are open to adventure activities. Whether it’s a relaxing, laid-back holiday you’re looking for with plenty of good shopping and places to eat and drink, or if you’re a certified adrenaline-junking looking for the next big thrill, Auckland has you covered. If you’re planning on staying in Auckland before or after your cruise, here are some of the highlights of the city:

Sky Tower

The iconic tower of the city, Sky tower dominates the skyline of Auckland. Standing at over 300 meters tall, the Sky tower is head and shoulders above the rest, and is the perfect place to start your adventures in the city. Offering panoramic views of the peninsula, the Sky tower is also home to award-winning restaurants like Orbit 360 dining, which has a rotating dining room giving you a unique perspective of the city. The best part of the imposing tower though is without a doubt the Sky-jump. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to do a bungee jump off a tall tower, then this is your chance.

Waiheke Island

Just a 40 minute ferry ride from the center of the city, Waiheke island should definitely be a quick detour from your exploration of Auckland. A natural paradise – something you might imagine when you think of New Zealand – the island is home to many olive groves and vineyards, not to mention the beautiful sandy beaches. There are so many things to see and do on Waiheke Island, and especially so if you like outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking. For the thrill-seekers, there is even an epic zipline on the island. Offered by EcoZip adventures, the zipline will send you sailing over the magical forests and vineyards of the island and ensure your trip to the island is unforgettable.

Rangitoto island

From adventure to awe-inspiring landscapes, Rangitoto island sits just 25 minutes from the city of Auckland by ferry and you’d be remiss not to make the short trip over. The largest volcanic cone in Auckland, it’s not often you get the chance to walk over volcanic terrain. On top of that, the island boasts the world’s largest Pohutukawa forest, a type of tree native to New Zealand, the enchanting forest adds so much charm to the already incredible island. If you’ve always wanted to go kayaking, this island couldn’t be a better place to try it. Get in touch with Auckland sea kayaks to organize a memorable sunset tour of the island.

Waitemata harbour

One of the two harbors that gives Auckland its title of “the city of sails”, Waitemata harbour is well worth a visit for fantastic views of the city and surrounding area. All around the harbour are excellent bars and restaurants right on the sea for an interesting dining experience. Take a walk around the harbour to soak up the maritime ambience and breathe the fresh sea air that makes Auckland such an invigorating place to be.

Auckland war memorial museum

To find out more about the country of New Zealand and its rich history, head over to the Auckland war memorial museum. One of the most important museums in the country, the war memorial museum contains everything from the iconic kiwi bird to the fascinating Maori culture of the island. Set in a magnificent new-classical style building that is one of the most unique in the city, the museum provides thought-provoking insights into the mysterious and wonderful land of New Zealand. The tribal art and Maori exhibitions are a far cry from ordinary museum fare and shed light on the past inhabitants of the country.

MT Eden hiking

As aforementioned, Auckland is the perfect setting for adventure and natural beauty, which brings us to the fabulous hike up to Mount Eden. 5km from the city itself, Mount Eden – the highest volcano in Auckland – sits high above its surroundings and as you’d imagine is a great place to look over the city and the harbors. What was once an important place in Maori culture, is now a popular location to escape the city and be treated to some of the most picturesque views of the whole of Auckland. It’s definitely advisable to set off early in the morning because the sun rises over the city are spectacular.

Food

With all the adventure activities and hiking in the city, you’ll build up an appetite, so let’s take a look at the food options available in Auckland. On the island of Waiheke there is a fantastic restaurant that makes the most of the beautiful scenery called Casita Miro. Exciting al fresco dining, the restaurant offers a range of Mediterranean and local dishes to be relished in the sun and superb surroundings. In the center of the city of Auckland if you’re looking for the best views while you eat, head to Dr Rudi’s rooftop brewing company for incredible pizza and drinks. If fine dining sounds tempting, check out SidArt in the city center with its intriguing Indian fusion food and elegant interior.

Parnell

A wonderful historical village area of the city, Parnell is where to go to walk off your lunch and enjoy a coffee in a trendy cafe. Full of charming cafes, bars and antique shops, the district of Parnell definitely warrants a visit. One good option for an afternoon coffee or breakfast one morning is the cafe Biskit. Serving a variety of generous sized breakfasts from muesli to savory dishes, the cafe is a great spot to relax and reflect on the city. With European roots – deriving from European settlement in the 19th century – walking through Parnell is like taking a walk through the past.

Auckland botanical gardens

In a brilliant showcase of the local fauna and nature, the Auckland botanical gardens will delight all the senses. Located 20 minutes from the city, the botanical gardens are home to both exotic and local plants, lakes and sculptures. Pack up some food and head to the gardens for a highly relaxing experience walking around and taking in the wonderful aromas and vibrant colors of the flowers. With a fun forest trail as well, you can spend a whole afternoon leisurely perusing the gardens for a complete breathe of fresh air.

Takapuna nightlife

The place to go to experience the vibrant nightlife of Auckland, Takapuna has it all. From wonderfully characterful pubs like Mac’s brew bar which serves some of the best burgers around to go with its great selection of drinks, to The beer spot – an aptly named bar, allowing customers to pour their own beer from a huge selection on tap. If you’re looking for some exciting live music to go with your dinner, then try The elephant wrestler, a large dining hall frequented by live music groups and DJS.
